Community and Volunteering

The importance of community is recognised in all cultures around the world. It enables us to feel safe and supported, to feel a sense of connection and openness that leads to a more fulfilling, meaningful and joyful life. We recognise that our community is the foundation of Shanti Mission and a great source of richness and fun. We welcome people of all ages from all backgrounds, cultures and belief systems to our community.

There are a number of ways to get involved in the Shanti Mission community in addition to attending of our regular programs.

Volunteer

Volunteer SevaWe are grateful for any service that is offered, whether it be through cleaning, tidying, gardening, administration, meet & greet, shop assistance, food preparation or a myriad of other activities that help us to operate.

We often refer to volunteering as ‘Seva’, which is a Sanskrit term that properly reflects the spiritual growth and transformation that comes from helping a spiritual community to grow. We help our sevites (volunteers) to embody compassion and loving-kindness as well as completing the many tasks that need to be done to keep Shanti Mission operating.

Southern Highlands Community Farm

Southern Highlands Community Farm is a hub of community farming; sharing, learning, and building community. Interested groups, families and individuals can apply to be caretakers of crops, using sustainable practices, growing food to nourish yourself and others.

Nurturing beautiful, healthy fruit and nut trees is one of the most creative and peaceful ways to sustain individual and planetary health and social wellbeing. Teaching your children the cycles of the seasons, fruit and nut tree management is a valuable opportunity for any family.

Relax, enjoy the natural environment, and take positive action towards creating a better world. Meet like-minded people, share ideas, tips for farming, celebrate harvest and enjoy the seasons. [read more=”Read More” less=”Read Less”]

Our aim is to build a friendly community of volunteers where people feel respected and accepted. We understand that people volunteer for different reasons. We hope that your experience with us is fulfilling and enjoyable. We recognise the benefits of the mutual exchange, volunteers gaining positive experiences, developing relationships, being engaged with the cycle of seasonal farming, learning new shills and being beneficiaries of nutritious fruit. The farm will gain from the trees being nurtured and loved and its nutritious harvest collected and consumed. We invite you to join us and become a community farmer.

For more information please contact the Southern Highlands centre on southernhighlands @ shantimission.org.

About the Farm

The farm is 57 acres with 5,000 established fruit and nut trees; 2,000 apple trees of 110 different varieties. Other fruit trees are citrus (orange, lemons, grapefruit, cumquat and clementine); stone fruit (apricot, nectarine, peaches, cherry and plums); and pear, medlar, fig, kiwi fruit and olive. In addition it has grapes, raspberries, asparagus, rhubarb, and a vegetable patch. The nut trees are hazelnut, almonds, walnuts and pistachios. All trees were planted using dwarf rootstock. The farm was conceptualised as a repository of foods capable of being grown in the Southern Highlands. Between 1997 and 2010 it was a certified organic farm. We wish to acknowledge and thank the previous community groups that cultivated the farm. [/read]

Vision Groups

Our vision groups are collectives of people who are passionate about assisting change to occur in a particular area of life that appears to be out of balance or inconsistent with what we imagine a peaceful and harmonious world would look like.  The purpose of the vision groups is to use the tools that we learn at Shanti Mission, such as meditation, energy healing and prayer, to assist in bringing about positive change in the world.
